Pool waterfall feature8/26/2023 ![]() Echo and reverberation can make the waterfall sound louder than it actually is. If your waterfall is part of an outdoor water feature, there’s probably plenty you can do to make it quieter.īut it’s also worth considering if there are any surrounding walls that the noise can bounce off. What Kind Of Environment Is Your Waterfall In?īefore working on your waterfall, it’s worth taking a bit of time to understand its environment and how this might help or hinder your solutions. While it’s not strictly necessary to understand this process in order to reduce waterfall noise, it does help in understanding why the solutions below help. But obviously the more this happens simultaneously, the louder it’ll be. This process is the same regardless of the volume of water that’s falling into a still body of water. The water droplet basically becomes a miniature Helmholtz resonator. In short, this means that smaller air pockets resonate at a higher pitch than larger ones and that the pitch increases as the air pocket decreases. Gravity then restores the water’s surface equilibrium, and in the process forces the trapped air out.Īny sound caused during this process by the water vibrating resonates at a frequency that’s inversely proportional to the volume of the air trapped under the surface. This bubble then pops, releasing the air, which creates a sound.īut if the water’s surface doesn’t completely close around the drop before the drop’s surface collapses, you end up with a kind of teardrop-shaped pocket of air beneath the water’s surface. If the water droplet doesn’t have enough energy to break the surface tension, the water closes around the droplet, which traps some air inside the “bubble”. ![]() This process may or may not be strong enough to break the water’s surface tension. When this comes into contact with the surface of the still water, the kinetic energy becomes vibrations, which convert into sound waves.īut in more detail, the water droplet pushes the water’s surface down and penetrates into the water to a degree. ![]() The science behind waterfall noise is quite interesting but can become complicated when you start involving fluid mechanics.Īt the most basic level, water falling has some amount of kinetic energy from its movement. While many people find the sound relaxing, it can be irritating if you need to concentrate on something important or are trying to sleep.īut why exactly does water make noise when it falls? The most common sources of waterfall noise in the home are either backyard water features or fish tanks. Hopefully, by the end, you’ll have a good solution for this distraction. In this article, I’ll look at the science behind waterfall noise along with the best ways to reduce it. This will drastically reduce the noise it makes. You’d be best to use something soft like a sponge, but you could also fit a ramp so the water pours rather than falls. The easiest way to reduce waterfall noise is to put something at the bottom to break the water’s fall. If that’s you then you probably want to know how to reduce waterfall noise. Fill out the rest of the structure with fake stones you can either purchase from your local home improvement store or make yourself. While I love the sound of falling water, I know some people can find it irritating. Only use real stone to create the lip of the waterfall, as the water will destroy the Styrofoam over time. When you're finished with the Styrofoam, start laying the real stone. It can be useful to draft up a plan in advance for your overall look, so you can take some of the guesswork out of these cuts. Cut and place the dock Styrofoam around the wood base, shaping the pieces as you see fit to create the look you want. Now you can start giving the fountain character. Place waterproof sealant around the tubes and joints to prevent leaking. Have the tubing run to the second layer of the waterfall (if you have one) and secure. Attach a T-connector to the existing tubing, followed by a tube to the pump and another that will feed the waterfall. There is no need to purchase a separate pump as the pool will feed the fountain with some modification. Once you are satisfied, begin stapling the heavy pool liner over the wood until you can't see it. When the structure is completed, move it in place at the edge of the pool and test that it sits level. You will also need to create a casing for the tubes to hide inside the waterfall. Make smaller pieces of 2x4s and secure them to divert the water toward the lips of the waterfall. Cut the plywood to the dimensions you need to make shelves and water reservoirs as well as the sides and affix the pieces to the 2x4s. Trim your 2x4 pieces of wood to the height you need to use as legs, and then cut more for braces that will provide support.
